Diagnostic Signs You Can Catch Before the ECM Does

You don't need a shop full of diagnostic equipment to suspect injector trouble. Here are practical indicators any driver or fleet manager can track:

Fuel economy decline without a clear cause. Keep a running log of miles per gallon. A drop of more than 5% that persists across different drivers, routes, and load weights is worth investigating. Don't normalize it.

Black or grey exhaust smoke under load. Some smoke on a cold start is normal. Persistent dark smoke when the engine is fully warmed up and under moderate load suggests incomplete combustion — a classic injector symptom.

Rough idle or slight misfire. When one or more injectors are partially clogged, the engine doesn't run as smoothly as it should at low RPM. You might feel it as a subtle roughness or hear it as an irregular idle note.
